Zen explained effortlessly by a master
When I read this book, the effect was like a bolt of lightening! I was studying Western Philosophy at the time and with all the questions in my mind, this book was like a key that unlocked them! D.T. Suzuki, perhaps the foremost interpreter of Zen Buddhism to the West, has written a book that illuminates Zen in such a clear way, that the effect is like a lamp shining away the darkness of ignorance. I would encourage all people who are looking for a very clearly written, concise introduction to Zen Buddhism to look no further. I would say that "Living by Zen" can even go one step further and "show" what it is like to live by Zen. May all beings be happy and free!

Medieval Germany, 1056-1273
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (February, 1900)
Authors: Alfred Haverkamp, Helga Braun, and Richard Mortimer
Average review score:

Most concise, easy reading medieval German history I've read
In my research for information about the history of castles in Germany for a future book and web site I've purchased almost every book on the subject of medieval Germany I could get my hands on. I figured that if I read the same subject over and over something would eventually stick. I should have found Professor Haverkamp's book first. I would have saved a fortune.

A top-notch read even for a pseudoscientist!
A research cookbook down to the proper utensils and ingredients: Written with absolute clarity, by experts in their fields, this book covers the very latest in neuroscience research in great detail, with a special emphasis on the latest research methods and techniques. I have a BA in biochemistry from the 1950s, and I had to read much of this book for a work assignment. I found that not only could I understand it but that I was fascinated and could hardly put it down.

Mexican Churches
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (July, 1999)
Authors: Eliot Porter, Ellen Auerbach, and Donna Pierce
Average review score:

Arquitectonic richness of Mexican churches

It contains a large colection of photos that shows the great variety and arquitectonic richness of Mexican churches, some of them are not well know, and their splendor is in certain way product of the cultural hispano-indian sincretism. The photos were taken around 1956 by the excelent photographer, landscape specialist, Eliot Porter (who quit medicine for photography).

Its old but still the best
I took this book to Mexico with me recently and was amazed by how well researched and authoritative it still was despite having been written a decade ago. The sisters have a great insight into the country and a sense of humor to go with it. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Mexico and its culture.

Mexico Between Hitler and Roosevelt: Mexican Foreign Relations in the Age of Lazaro Cardenas, 1934-1940
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (January, 2000)
Author: Friedrich E. Schuler
Average review score:

El Tata revisited
I'm not that fond of Lázaro Cárdenas or his legacy, but this book showed me a different side of him that made me realize he was a far more complex, shrewd, practical and wiser man than I initially thought him to be.

However slanted the author's appraisal of his subject may seem to me (I'm sorry but Mr. Cárdenas was more of a cacique than a democrat, if he ever was one), the book is full of facts, many of them unknown to most Mexicans, and makes an interesting reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
